Choose a bolder or more fashionable style when that is genuinely your taste, the humour suits the recipient or the artwork is intended as a deliberate statement piece.

Do not choose novelty at the expense of likeness

A funny costume or strong design works best when the animal still looks recognisable. The joke should sit on top of the likeness rather than replacing it.

Think about colour longevity

A strong background can be excellent wall art. Ask whether you like the colour itself or merely like seeing it everywhere this year. Muted or neutral does not automatically equal timeless either; beige has also committed crimes.
