  • August Bank Holiday Pet Photo Checklist for a Custom Portrait

    August 31, 2026 5 min read

The August Bank Holiday is useful for two things: an extra day away from the usual routine and discovering that the weather has not read the calendar. If you have been meaning to take a genuinely good photograph of your pet, though, the long weekend gives you something more useful than another optimistic barbecue.

For England and Wales, the summer bank holiday falls on Monday 31 August in 2026. You do not need to turn the day into a formal photoshoot. A short, relaxed session can give you a small set of clear photographs that are useful now and can later become a custom pet portrait.

The aim is not to create seven perfect Instagram photographs. It is to build a useful little photo library showing the face, expression, markings and shape that make your pet recognisably yours.

The Bank Holiday pet photo checklist

If you have ten or fifteen minutes, try to capture several different views rather than taking forty versions of the same head-on photograph. You may only use one image for a future pet portrait from photo, but having a choice makes selecting that image much easier.

    1. Take one clear, front-facing photograph

Start with the boringly useful one. Get down towards your pet's eye level and take a photograph where the face is large enough in the frame to see the eyes, nose, ears and markings clearly.

This does not have to be the photograph with the most personality. Think of it as your reference image: clean, clear and difficult to misunderstand.

    2. Capture a three-quarter angle

A slight turn of the head can show more facial shape than a completely straight-on photograph. It may also capture an expression that feels more natural, particularly for pets who hear a camera pointed at them and immediately assume they are being interviewed by the police.

Try taking several frames while somebody stands just beside you or makes a familiar sound. Do not worry if the pet looks slightly off-camera. A recognisable expression is more useful than forced eye contact.

    3. Photograph the profile

A side view is useful for showing muzzle length, ear shape, forehead and the overall outline of the head. For dogs with long noses, folded ears or distinctive profiles, it can preserve details that disappear in a head-on picture.

The profile does not necessarily need to become the final portrait reference. It can simply help document what your pet actually looks like from another angle.

    4. Wait for the expression you recognise

This is the photograph worth being patient for. Some pets look most like themselves when alert; others when relaxed, slightly unimpressed or waiting for food to appear through administrative error.

Keep the session short and take the photograph when the familiar expression arrives naturally. A technically perfect image with the wrong expression can feel less like your pet than a slightly less polished photograph that catches them exactly right.

    5. Take one full-body photograph

Even if you are mainly interested in a head-and-shoulders personalised pet portrait, a full-body image can help preserve useful context: proportions, coat length, colouring and scale.

Stand far enough back that paws, tail and ears are not cropped unintentionally. You can still move closer afterwards for the detailed photographs.

    6. Get a close-up of distinctive markings

If your pet has a white blaze, brindle striping, merle patches, freckles, an unusual nose marking or mismatched facial colouring, photograph it clearly. Those details are often what make a likeness convincing.

For complex coats, our guide to photographing brindle, merle and spotted pets for a portrait goes into more detail about preserving patterns accurately in the source image.

    7. Take one photograph that is simply a memory

Not every photograph has to be useful for artwork. Take one of the dog on the walk, the cat in their favourite window, the rabbit investigating the garden or you together if somebody else is around to hold the camera.

It may never become artwork. That is fine. A long weekend is still allowed to contain photographs that exist simply because you liked the afternoon.

If the Bank Holiday weather is being British

You do not need outdoor sunshine for a useful portrait photograph. If the weather is grim, move near a bright window indoors and photograph the pet facing towards the natural light rather than placing the window directly behind them.

A familiar room can also make it easier to capture a relaxed expression. Keep the area immediately around the head reasonably clear and avoid heavy filters or portrait-mode effects that blur the edges of ears and fur.

If you do get outside, our outdoor dog photo guide covers soft daylight, eye-level angles, facial detail and background contrast without requiring you to turn the local park into a production set.

How to choose the photograph afterwards

Once you have finished, do not select the winner while you are still staring at twenty nearly identical thumbnails. Come back later and compare them using a few practical questions:

    • Can you clearly see both eyes, or the eye that matters most in the chosen angle?
    • Does the coat colour look accurate?
    • Are distinctive markings visible?
    • Is the face sharp rather than motion-blurred?
    • Does the expression actually look like your pet?
    • Have ears, whiskers or the top of the head been accidentally cropped?
    • Do you still have the original photo file rather than only a compressed screenshot?

If the answer is yes to most of those, you probably have a useful candidate. Our UK guide to personalised pet portraits from photos explains the wider process of choosing a photograph, portrait style and display format.

Do Bank Holiday photos need to look summery?

No. The date is the opportunity to take the photograph, not a design instruction for the artwork.

If your best image was taken under a grey sky, indoors beside a window or five minutes before rain started, it can still be a strong reference for a custom pet portrait. Clear facial information matters far more than proving that Britain technically reached the end of August.

There is already a separate guide with six summer photo ideas with your dog if you want more seasonal compositions. This checklist has a narrower job: helping you finish the weekend with a genuinely useful set of reference photographs.

    Frequently asked questions

What kind of photo is best for a personalised pet portrait?

A clear photograph where the face is large enough to see, the eyes and markings are visible, the coat colour looks natural and the expression feels recognisable is usually a strong place to start.

Can I use a phone photo for a custom pet portrait?

Yes. A clear original phone photograph can provide plenty of useful detail. Keep the original file where possible rather than relying on a screenshot downloaded from social media.

Should my pet look directly at the camera?

Not necessarily. A slight three-quarter angle or natural off-camera gaze can work well if it shows the face clearly and captures a familiar expression.

What if I already have an older favourite photo?

You do not need to replace it merely because you have taken new photographs. Compare the older image with the new set and choose the one that best shows your pet's likeness and personality.

Can I photograph more than one pet separately?

Yes. If you are considering artwork featuring several pets, clear separate photographs can be useful when a good group image does not exist. Check the current portrait option you are considering for its supported number of pets.

The dog is unlikely to care that it is a bank holiday. This is, in many ways, their most sensible position on the matter. But if the extra day gives you ten quiet minutes and one photograph that finally looks exactly like them, it has been reasonably productive.
