  • Dog Portrait Photo Mistakes: 10 Problems to Fix Before You Order

    June 21, 2026 4 min read

The most common dog portrait photo problems are blur, poor light, extreme angles, missing facial features and files that have been compressed or cropped too heavily. None of these automatically makes a photograph unusable, but each one gives the artist less reliable information about the dog.

This guide is a troubleshooting checklist for photographs you already have. If you need the broader buying overview, start with our dog portraits from photos UK guide.

    1. The dog is too small in the frame

A lovely photograph of a dog at the far end of a beach may be a strong memory and a weak facial reference. Open the original file and zoom in. If the eyes, muzzle and markings disappear quickly, look for a closer image.

If the distant photograph matters emotionally, keep it as a supporting reference and choose a clearer face image as the main source.

    2. The face is blurred

Motion blur can hide the exact shape of the eyes, nose, ears and coat markings. Slight softness may still be workable; severe blur forces more interpretation.

Do not assume aggressive sharpening will restore genuine detail. It may create convincing-looking edges that were not present in the original.

    3. The photograph is too dark

If the face disappears into shadow, the artist has less information about expression and coat detail. This is especially common with black or very dark dogs photographed indoors or against dark backgrounds.

See how to photograph a black dog or cat for a custom portrait for a dedicated lighting checklist.

    4. A bright window is behind the dog

Strong backlighting can turn the dog into a silhouette while the window is perfectly exposed, which is impressive work by the camera and not especially helpful for the portrait.

Choose an image where the main light reaches the front or side of the face, or use another photograph to confirm hidden features.

    5. The camera is too close to the nose

Very close phone photographs can exaggerate the nose and compress the rest of the head. A playful wide-angle close-up may be exactly the expression you love, but it can distort facial proportions.

A photo taken slightly farther back around eye level generally gives a more neutral reference.

    6. The ears or top of the head are cropped out

Ears contribute a great deal to a dog’s recognisable shape. If a favourite photograph crops one or both ears, keep another image that shows them clearly.

Do not crop the original more tightly just to remove a messy room. Background clutter is usually less damaging than deleting useful information about the dog.

    7. A filter has changed the coat or eye colour

Social-media filters can alter warmth, saturation, contrast and eye colour. If the image no longer matches the dog in real life, use the unfiltered original where possible.

If the only available copy came from a chat or social platform, read our guide to screenshots and WhatsApp pet photos.

    8. The dog is lying in a position that changes the face

A head pressed into a cushion or photographed from directly above can change the apparent shape of the muzzle, cheeks and ears. These photographs can be charming, but a more neutral angle may be easier to translate into a formal portrait style.

    9. An accessory hides an important feature

A harness, large collar, costume or toy may cover part of the neck, chest or face. Decide whether the accessory is part of how you want the dog remembered. If not, provide another reference that shows what is underneath.

Our guide to keeping or removing a collar, tag or harness covers that decision in more detail.

    10. You chose the most emotional photo without checking the useful detail

Emotional value and technical usefulness are not opposites, but they are not always the same thing. A favourite image may capture the exact expression you want while another photograph shows the coat and markings more clearly.

Use one as the main reference and the other to clarify details. For memorial artwork, this is often more sensible than rejecting a meaningful older image simply because it is imperfect.

What if every available photograph has a problem?

Choose the image that best preserves the dog’s expression and identity, then collect supporting photographs for anything it does not show. If the dog is still available to photograph, taking a new clear reference may be simpler.

For older memorial images, see our old and blurry pet photo guide.

    Quick pre-order dog photo test

    • Can you see the eyes?
    • Can you identify the muzzle shape?
    • Are the ears visible somewhere in your references?
    • Can you see distinctive markings?
    • Does the coat colour look natural?
    • Is the dog large enough in the image to inspect?
    • Do you have the original file rather than only a compressed copy?
    • Does the expression still feel like the dog?

    Frequently asked questions

Can a slightly blurry dog photo still work?

Potentially. The question is whether enough reliable facial detail remains visible. A clearer supporting image can help with markings or colour.

Can I use two photos of the same dog?

Yes. One can be the main expression reference and another can clarify features that are hidden or less clear.

Should I edit the background before uploading?

Usually not. Keep the original photograph intact unless the product instructions specifically require otherwise. Extra cropping can remove useful information.

    Can a screenshot work?

Sometimes. Check whether the face remains clear when enlarged and look for the original camera file first.

What if the dog has black fur?

Use a photograph with soft light on the face and enough contrast between the coat and background for the eyes, muzzle and outline to remain visible.

Fix the reference before blaming the artwork

Most photo problems are wonderfully ordinary. A clearer file, better supporting image or less aggressive crop can give the artist considerably more to work with.

Once you have checked the reference, browse the Paw & Glory pet portrait collection and choose the style that suits the dog rather than asking a weak photograph to perform miracles.
