  • National Pet Day Photo Checklist: 10 Photos Worth Taking of Your Pet

    September 15, 2024 5 min read

National Pet Day is a good annual reminder to take the pet photographs you will actually want to keep, not merely the 47 near-identical frames produced while trying to make them look at the camera. A useful set should show the face clearly, record distinctive markings and include the ordinary expressions and relationships that make the animal recognisable to you.

This ten-photo checklist works for everyday memories and also gives you stronger reference options if you ever want a custom pet portrait made from a photo.

    1. A clear front or three-quarter view

Start with the most useful reference: a close photograph where both eyes, the nose, ears and main facial markings are visible. A slight three-quarter angle often feels more natural than a perfectly straight passport-style pose.

Use soft daylight where possible and avoid heavy filters. The goal is to record how the pet actually looks.

    2. A photograph at eye level

Many pet photographs are taken from standing height, which can exaggerate the top of the head and make the body look smaller. Lowering the camera closer to the animal's eye level can give a more familiar view.

You do not need to flatten yourself onto the pavement. A crouch, a pet sitting on a safe raised surface or simply holding the phone lower can be enough.

    3. A side profile

A side view records muzzle length, ear shape, chest profile and other features that may not be obvious from the front. It is especially useful for dogs with distinctive noses, cats with strong profiles and pets whose ears behave differently depending on the angle.

    4. A full-body photograph

Take at least one image showing the whole animal while they are standing, sitting or lying naturally. This records proportions, leg markings, tail shape and coat pattern that close-ups miss.

If the pet will not pose, prioritise clarity over perfection. A natural standing photograph is more useful than a technically immaculate image of a blur departing the scene.

    5. A close-up of distinctive markings

Photograph anything that makes your pet visually unique: a white chest patch, different-coloured paws, freckles, an unusual eye marking or a distinctive patch of fur.

These detail photographs are valuable supporting references even if they would never become the main portrait image.

    6. Their most recognisable expression

The photograph that feels most like your pet may not be the most formal. Capture the head tilt, sleepy stare, ridiculous grin, suspicious side-eye or other expression your household immediately recognises.

When choosing a future portrait reference, likeness is not only about anatomy. The familiar expression often does a great deal of the work.

    7. Your pet with their person

Take at least one photograph that includes the relationship as well as the animal. It does not need to be a posed family portrait. A hand on the dog's head, a cat on a lap or an ordinary sofa photograph may become far more meaningful later.

Use a timer, ask somebody else or prop the phone securely rather than relying on the front camera for every image.

    8. Your pet in a favourite place

Photograph the place that belongs to them in practice, even if the deeds remain annoyingly silent on the matter. It might be a particular chair, window, garden step, walking route or patch of floor selected for reasons unavailable to science.

The surroundings help preserve context, while a separate close-up can still provide the clearer facial reference.

    9. A multi-pet photograph

If you have more than one pet, take a group photograph but do not make it the only record. Also photograph each animal separately in good light.

Group photos are useful for memories; individual references give you more flexibility later. If you want several pets combined into artwork, see our multi-pet portrait photo guide.

    10. A neutral-light backup photo

Finish with a plain, accurate reference taken in daylight without dramatic filters, coloured lighting or deep shadow. It may not be the photograph you post, but it can help confirm coat colour and markings when another favourite image is warmer, darker or more stylised.

Extra photo for black or very dark pets

Dark fur needs enough light to separate the eyes, muzzle and outline of the face. Avoid placing a black dog or cat against a very dark background, and expose for the face rather than the room behind them.

Our black dog and cat photography guide has a fuller checklist.

What if your pet never stays still?

Work with movement rather than fighting it. Use good light, take short bursts, keep sessions brief and wait for natural pauses. A favourite toy or another person's attention can help direct the gaze without forcing a rigid pose.

    Keep the original files

If you photograph on a phone, keep the original image rather than only saving a compressed version from a social post or message. The original normally contains more detail and gives you more flexibility for cropping.

If the only copy you have is from a message, social platform or screenshot, do not automatically discard it. Read our screenshot and WhatsApp pet photo guide to understand what may still be usable.

How to choose one photo for a custom pet portrait

You do not need to choose immediately. First keep the full set, then compare facial clarity, expression, angle and colour. The strongest reference is usually the one that combines useful visual detail with a look that feels unmistakably like the animal.

Our best existing pet photo guide gives a step-by-step comparison, and you can browse personalised pet portraits if you decide to turn one into artwork.

    Frequently asked questions

How many pet photos should I keep?

There is no correct number. Keep the images with genuine differences in expression, life stage, people, setting and markings rather than treating storage as a competition.

Can I use portrait mode on my phone?

You can, but check that artificial background blur has not clipped ears, whiskers or fur around the outline. Keep a normal photograph as a backup.

    Are indoor photos good enough?

Yes, if there is enough light to see the face and coat clearly. Window light can work well; very dim rooms and strong coloured bulbs make accurate detail harder to judge.

Do I need a professional camera?

No. A modern phone can produce an excellent pet reference photo when the light, focus and distance are sensible.

Ten useful photographs beat a thousand accidental ones

The point of the checklist is not to manufacture a perfect pet photoshoot. It is to make sure your camera roll contains a small, useful record of the animal as they actually look and behave now. National Pet Day merely provides the deadline humans apparently require for such things.
