The “best” dog treat is not the one with the most dramatic health claim on the packet. It is one that suits your dog, is used appropriately and can be given safely alongside the dog's normal diet.
Check the ingredients, feeding instructions, intended dog size or life stage where stated, storage guidance and any warnings. Product information is more useful than a generic online list ranking brands from several years ago.
A treat should suit the dog's size and chewing style. Supervise chewing and remove anything that breaks into unsafe pieces or becomes small enough to swallow unexpectedly.
Training can involve many repetitions, so small rewards can be more practical than repeatedly feeding large snacks. Account for treats as part of the dog's overall intake.
Words such as “natural”, “dental” or “healthy” need context. If you are choosing a product for a specific medical, dental, allergy or weight concern, ask a veterinary professional what is appropriate for your dog.
Some dogs have sensitive digestion or food intolerances. Follow the product guidance and stop using a treat if you notice a concerning reaction. Seek veterinary advice for persistent or significant symptoms.
Not every human food is safe for dogs, and recipes circulating online are not automatically suitable. Use dog-specific products or veterinary guidance rather than assuming a small amount is harmless.
Store treats according to the label, keep packaging secure and discard products that are spoiled, damaged or past their recommended use.
Treats are supplementary. If your dog has a prescribed diet, allergies, a medical condition or a weight-management plan, discuss extras with your vet so rewards do not quietly undo the nutritional plan.
