A good portrait of a person with their pet should look like the relationship, not an awkward annual report photograph involving a Labrador. You do not need studio equipment. You need decent light, a comfortable setting and enough patience for both subjects to stop wondering what they are meant to do with their hands and paws.
Photograph at home, in a garden or somewhere the pet already knows. Familiar surroundings tend to make natural interaction easier than asking an animal to perform in an unfamiliar location.

Window light or open shade is usually easier to work with than direct sun or a harsh phone flash. Position both faces so their features are visible without deep shadow or squinting.
Instead of demanding that both subjects stare at the lens, photograph the person stroking, holding, walking or simply sitting with the pet. These moments often look more genuine because there is something natural to do.
Ask the person to sit or kneel where appropriate so the height difference is less extreme. This helps keep both faces within a useful composition and avoids turning the pet into a small object near someone's ankles.
When both faces are visible, make sure at least the nearer eyes are sharp. On a phone, tap the faces to set focus and take several frames because pets have a dependable talent for blinking at exactly the wrong moment.
You do not need an empty wall, but remove obvious distractions such as bright bags, bins or clutter directly behind the subjects. A few seconds of tidying is easier than wishing later that a laundry basket had not become the third member of the portrait.
Start with the straightforward photograph, then keep shooting while the subjects relax. The frame immediately after the formal pose is often the one with the better expression.
Keep the largest original images rather than relying only on social-media copies. If a photograph later becomes a reference for custom pet artwork, the extra detail can be useful.
