A good Christmas pet photo for a custom portrait is still, first and foremost, a good photo of the pet. Festive lights, blankets and decorations are optional. Clear eyes, visible ears, natural proportions and a recognisable expression matter much more than persuading a spaniel to sit beneath an ornamental arch while wearing antlers it has already rejected on constitutional grounds.
If you want the photograph to become a personalised pet portrait, use Christmas styling around the pet rather than covering the details the artist needs.
Soft daylight is the easiest option. Place the pet near a bright window and turn off harsh overhead lighting if it creates strong shadows. Christmas tree lights can stay in the background for atmosphere, but they are rarely bright enough to light the petโs face properly on their own.
It can be, especially if you want a seasonal family photograph as well as a portrait reference. Position the pet a little in front of the tree rather than directly underneath dark branches. This gives the camera a clearer subject and can create a softer background.
Only if they are comfortable. For portrait reference, keep the face, neck and ears visible. If the jumper bunches around the chin or the hat covers one ear, take an additional clean reference photo without it.
The portrait does not require the pet to tolerate a photoshoot they dislike. A calm, ordinary image is more useful than a festive picture in which the animal looks as though legal advice has been sought.
Get down to the petโs eye level. Photos taken from standing height can exaggerate the head and shorten the body. Eye-level images usually preserve the proportions owners recognise most easily.
Use more light on the face than you think you need. Dark fur can lose detail quickly in a cosy, dim room. A bright window or softly lit area helps separate the eyes, muzzle and ears from the coat. Avoid placing a black pet against a very dark tree or sofa if a lighter position is available.
Protect the highlights. If the fur becomes a blank white patch on screen, move away from the brightest window or tap the petโs face on your phone screen and reduce exposure slightly. A mid-tone background can make pale fur easier to read.
No. Prioritise the expression and detail in the pet. Depending on the chosen design, the original background may not be part of the finished artwork. A clear photo in a slightly untidy room is usually a better reference than a blurred photo in immaculate festive scenery.
Absolutely, provided the face contains enough detail. Older photographs can be especially meaningful for memorial gifts or a petโs first Christmas. If you only have a copy sent through a messaging app, see our WhatsApp pet photo guide.
Allow time for artwork review, printing and delivery. Standard first artwork is normally ready within 1โ3 working days and printing typically takes 3โ5 working days after approval. Seasonal courier capacity can change, so use current checkout information rather than relying on an old fixed Christmas cutoff.

For a Christmas pet portrait photo, use soft bright light, get to eye level, keep the face and ears visible and let festive props stay secondary. The photo should still look like your pet when every bauble is removed from the equation.
