A break with your dog is considerably easier when the boring practical things are packed before the scenic photographs begin. Accommodation rules and local requirements vary, so check the place you are staying and your destination before travelling. This checklist covers the everyday items that are easy to forget.
Bring enough of your dog's usual food for the trip, plus the bowls or feeding equipment you normally use. Changing food simply because you are away can be an unnecessary complication, particularly for dogs with dietary needs.
Pack a travel water container and a bowl your dog can use away from the accommodation. Plan regular opportunities to offer fresh water, especially during longer journeys or warmer conditions.
Take the walking equipment your dog is already comfortable using and inspect it before leaving. Check that any identification and contact information you rely on is current, and review the rules that apply at your destination.
A familiar sleeping setup can make an unfamiliar room feel less strange. Bring the bed or crate your dog normally uses where practical, or pack a familiar blanket. A personalised pet blanket is one option if you already use one at home.
If your dog takes medication or has specific care needs, pack what is required and keep the relevant instructions with you. For prescription medication, travel health questions or uncertainty about your dog's fitness to travel, speak to your veterinary professional in advance.
Pack more poo bags than you think you will need. A towel is useful after muddy walks, wet weather or beach trips; current custom pet towels can also double as a familiar item from home.
You do not need to relocate the entire toy basket. One or two familiar toys can be enough for downtime, provided they are suitable for the place you are staying.
Keep your accommodation contact information, veterinary details and any booking requirements somewhere easy to access. If travelling farther afield, check current transport, pet-entry and accommodation rules from official sources before setting off.
Once the practical things are covered, leave some room in the bag. A clear favourite photograph from the trip can later become a custom pet portrait, which is rather easier to store than the entire contents of the holiday cottage.
