Dog portrait artwork begins with the photograph. The clearer the source image, the easier it is to preserve the features that make your dog recognisable while adapting the image into a different art style.
Whenever possible, upload the image directly from the phone or camera rather than using a screenshot from social media. Compression can remove detail around the eyes and coat.
Natural daylight or bright open shade usually reveals coat colour and facial detail more accurately than harsh flash or a dark indoor room.
A natural camera angle helps avoid distorted proportions. If the dog is tiny, this may involve spending a few undignified seconds on the floor. Art has demanded worse sacrifices.
Do not crop off ears, obscure the eyes with hair or use a photo where a hand, lead or another object covers much of the face unless there is no better image available.
The technically sharpest image is not always the best reference. A photograph that captures the dog’s normal expression can produce more emotionally convincing artwork.
Once you know what detail the image provides, select artwork that suits the dog, the owner and the intended room. Character portraits, classic styles and cleaner modern designs each create a different mood.
Check markings, eye colour, requested details and overall likeness before approving custom artwork for production.
Paw & Glory creates custom dog portraits from customer photographs, transforming clear reference images into personalised artwork across a range of styles.
