How to Choose the Best Existing Photo for a Custom Pet Portrait

You do not need to stage a new photoshoot to create a custom pet portrait. In many cases, the best reference is already sitting in your camera roll: the photograph where your pet looks unmistakably like themselves.

Start With Recognition, Not Perfection

Choose the image that makes you immediately think, “That is them.” A technically perfect photograph with an unfamiliar expression is often less useful than a clear everyday photo that captures their normal face, ears, markings and personality.

Check the Face at Full Size

Open the original image and zoom in. Can you clearly see the eyes, nose, fur pattern and distinctive markings? A photo can look sharp as a small thumbnail while becoming soft or pixelated when enlarged.

Look for Even, Natural-Looking Light

The pet's features should be visible without one side of the face disappearing into heavy shadow or bright highlights washing out pale fur. Window light and open shade often produce useful reference photos, but the important thing is visibility rather than a particular photography setup.

Choose a Useful Angle

A front-facing or gently turned head usually makes facial proportions easier to read. Very high, very low or extremely wide-angle phone shots can distort the head and muzzle. If the unusual angle is part of the image you love, keep it, but understand what the camera is doing.

Make Sure Important Markings Are Visible

If your pet has a white chest, split-colour face, unusual ears, scars or other identifying details, choose a photo that shows them clearly. A second reference image can be useful when one important feature is hidden.

Do Not Worry Too Much About the Background

A messy room, lead, piece of furniture or person in the source image does not automatically make the pet itself a poor reference. Focus first on whether the animal is clear. Check the current portrait options for what can be changed or removed from the final artwork.

Use the Original File Where Possible

Send the original image from your phone or camera rather than a screenshot or WhatsApp pet photo, social-media download or image repeatedly forwarded through messaging apps. Those copies may have been compressed.
