If you are searching for hand-painted pet portraits, it helps to know what you are actually buying. “Pet portrait” can describe an original oil painting, a watercolour, a pencil drawing, a digitally created illustration, or artwork that is hand-illustrated from a photograph and then professionally printed.
Those are different products with different processes, prices and physical results. None is automatically superior. The useful question is which one matches what you want to own.
A genuinely hand-painted pet portrait is an original physical artwork created with a traditional painting medium such as oil, acrylic or watercolour. The paint itself is applied to the original surface by the artist.
If an original hand-painted piece is important to you, check exactly which medium is used, whether the piece you receive is the original artwork or a reproduction, the artist’s portfolio, dimensions and expected completion time.
Hand-illustrated portrait services use an artist to create the artwork from your pet photograph, but the final physical product may be a professionally produced print, framed print or canvas rather than an original painted surface.
Paw & Glory’s current custom pet portrait products are described as hand-illustrated from your photo. The artwork is then produced in the physical format selected on the product page. For example, current portrait products are printed after artwork approval, while current canvas products are printed on stretched canvas.
That means Paw & Glory should not be described as selling original oil, acrylic or watercolour commissions unless a specific future product explicitly says so.
| Feature | Original hand-painted portrait | Hand-illustrated printed portrait |
|---|---|---|
| Original physical paint surface | Yes | No, artwork is produced as a print/canvas |
| Created from your pet photo | Often | Yes |
| Digital proof may be available | Depends on artist | Depends on service; Paw & Glory currently provides an artwork proof |
| Multiple physical formats | Usually limited by the original medium | Often available across selected print/canvas formats |
| Original one-off painted object | Yes | No |
No. “Digital” describes a medium or workflow, not who created the artwork. A digital illustration can be created by an artist using drawing tools, just as a physical illustration can be created with pencil or paint. If the creation method matters to you, read the provider’s description rather than assuming from the word “digital”.
The source photograph and the artist’s ability to preserve likeness matter whatever medium you choose. Look at how the service handles eye shape, coat markings, ear position, expression and unusual features.

A printed custom pet canvas is not the same thing as an original oil painting simply because both are on canvas-like wall-art formats. Check whether the seller says “original painting”, “printed canvas” or something else. Terminology should describe the product rather than improve its social life.
That depends on the recipient. An original painting can feel especially appropriate for somebody who values traditional art and the one-off physical object. A hand-illustrated framed pet portrait or canvas can be easier when you want to select a particular style and order remotely from a photograph.
Either can be meaningful. For memorial artwork, the recognisability of the pet, the emotional importance of the photograph and the recipient’s taste matter more than winning an argument about artistic medium.
If the source image is old, see our guide to pet memorial portraits from old photos.
There is room for traditional hand-painted portraits and artist-created digital or printed pet art. The important part is that the product description tells you the truth. A customer should not have to perform art-material archaeology after checkout.
