After losing a pet, people remember them in very different ways. Some want a visible tribute in the home; others keep a collar, photograph or small object somewhere private. A memorial keepsake does not need to be grand. Its value comes from the memory attached to it.
Before deciding on a keepsake, think about the part of your pet's life you most want it to hold: a familiar expression, a favourite walk, the day they came home, an old collar, a particular photograph or simply the feeling of having them nearby.
A memory box can hold photographs, tags, a collar, a favourite toy, handwritten notes or other items that matter to you. There is no need to fill it immediately. You can add things gradually when it feels right.

Sometimes the simplest memorial is the photograph you already return to. Print it well, place it somewhere meaningful, or create a small group of images from different stages of your pet's life.
If artwork feels right for your home, a pet memorial portrait can be created from a photograph you value. Choose an image that looks recognisably like your pet rather than feeling pressured to find a formally perfect photograph.
A photo book can tell more of the story than a single image. Include ordinary moments as well as special occasions: sleeping positions, muddy walks, favourite chairs and the expressions that only made sense to people who knew them.
Names, nicknames, routines and habits can fade surprisingly quickly. Writing down the small details while you remember them can become an important keepsake in its own right.
If you prefer something practical, a personalised pet blanket, custom pet cushion or pet mug can keep a favourite photograph present without creating a formal memorial display.
A tree, pot or small garden area can become a quiet place associated with the pet. Choose something suitable for your space and climate rather than feeling that the memorial has to follow a particular tradition.
You do not need to decide what to keep, display or create immediately after a loss. Store photographs and meaningful belongings safely and return to them when you are ready. A memorial is for you, not a task with an expiry date.
