In a custom pet portrait, likeness matters more than style because the artwork only works if the owner recognises their specific animal. A spectacular costume, beautiful colour palette or expensive frame cannot rescue a face that looks vaguely like somebody else’s Labrador.
Face shape, muzzle length, ear position, eye spacing and head proportions create the basic identity of the animal. These details matter before decorative choices are added.
Two dogs of the same breed can look completely different because one habitually looks alert and the other looks as though Monday has personally offended him. A familiar expression often matters more than technical photographic perfection.
Coat patches, blazes, freckles and asymmetrical features help distinguish one pet from another. Good source photos should show these clearly, especially where costume artwork covers part of the body.
Minimalist, royal, pop-art and costume-led artwork can all work when the pet remains the visual anchor. If the styling overwhelms the animal, personalisation starts to feel cosmetic rather than meaningful.
The best reference image is not necessarily the prettiest photo. Choose one that shows the features you instinctively associate with the pet.
Our pet portrait from photo guide covers image selection, while the photo-angle guide explains how front-facing, three-quarter and profile images change the result.
Paw & Glory provides an artwork proof before production and allows artwork revisions before approval. Look first at the face without being distracted by costume, background or frame colour. If the likeness feels right, the styling has a much stronger foundation.
Browse custom pet portraits to compare different visual styles built around the same basic requirement: the pet still needs to look like the pet.
