  • Notting Hill Carnival 2026: 7 Colour Ideas for a Bold Pet Portrait

    August 31, 2026 4 min read

Notting Hill Carnival returns across Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August 2026, with this year marking its 60th anniversary. If the colour, movement and visual energy of Carnival has put you in the mood for something less beige, it can also be a useful prompt when choosing a custom pet portrait.

This is not about putting your dog in a Carnival costume or dragging a pet into a huge crowd for the sake of a photograph. Leave Carnival to Carnival. The useful inspiration is much simpler: confident colour, strong contrast, layered detail and artwork that knows when to stop apologising for being visible.

For current Carnival information, use the official Notting Hill Carnival website.

    1. Pick one strong background colour

A bold pet portrait does not need six competing colours behind the animal. One confident background can create far more impact, particularly when it contrasts clearly with the petโ€™s coat.

For a black dog or cat, brighter or lighter backgrounds can help the outline, ears and facial features remain visible. For pale coats, deeper colours can create cleaner separation. The objective is contrast, not turning the background into an audition for every paint swatch in Britain.

Our guide to background, crop and colour in pet portraits explains how those choices affect the finished artwork.

    2. Use two colours that deliberately clash

Some of the most effective colourful artwork uses a limited palette with strong tension between two shades rather than a perfectly coordinated set of neutrals. Pink with orange, blue with yellow or green with magenta can feel energetic while still leaving the pet as the focal point.

This works particularly well for pop art pet portraits, where graphic contrast is part of the style rather than an accidental side effect.

    3. Keep the petโ€™s face quieter than the background

If the artwork uses a vivid background, the petโ€™s recognisable features need some restraint. Eyes, muzzle shape, ears, markings and expression should still read clearly.

A colourful portrait succeeds when somebody sees the artwork and immediately recognises the animal. If the first response is โ€œlovely colours, whose dog is it?โ€, the hierarchy has gone somewhat astray.

    4. Let one detail carry the brightest colour

You do not have to make the entire portrait equally intense. A collar, bandana, graphic shape or small accent can carry the brightest colour while the rest of the composition stays calmer.

This is useful when you want a personalised pet portrait to feel lively but still work in a normal living room once August Bank Holiday has finished and everyone has returned to discussing paint samples.

    5. Match the palette to the room where the portrait will live

Before choosing artwork colours, look at the wall, furniture and surrounding objects. A bold portrait can still work beautifully in a neutral room, but it helps to repeat one smaller colour already present in cushions, books, lamps or other artwork.

If the room is already colourful, consider making the portrait more controlled so it does not compete with everything around it. Our pet portrait style for your home guide covers colour, humour, formality and placement.

    6. Choose the art style before choosing the palette

Colour behaves differently in different portrait styles. Pop art welcomes harder contrast and simplified graphic shapes. Modern portraits can use colour more selectively. Royal or Renaissance-inspired portraits usually rely more heavily on costume, texture and darker tonal backgrounds.

If you are not sure where your taste sits, our pet portrait style quiz narrows the choice between minimalist, royal, military, pop-art and cartoon approaches.

    7. Start with a clear pet photo, not a colourful one

The source photo does not need to contain the colours you want in the finished portrait. What matters more is that the pet is clear enough to work from.

Choose a photograph with visible eyes, ears and facial markings, decent focus and natural colour. Avoid heavy filters, tiny screenshots and dark images where the pet disappears into the background. The artwork can introduce stronger colour later. Recovering detail that was never visible in the photo is considerably less cooperative.

Should you take your pet to Notting Hill Carnival for a portrait photo?

For most pets, a quieter setting is a much better place to take a portrait reference. Large crowds, loud music, heat, travel disruption and long periods on busy streets can be stressful for animals. You do not need a photograph taken at Carnival to create artwork influenced by bold colour.

Take the useful idea home instead. Photograph your pet somewhere calm in good light, then choose the artwork style and palette separately.

Which pet portrait styles work best with bold colour?

Pop art is the obvious choice when you want strong contrast and graphic colour. Modern pet portraits can also use colourful or contemporary backgrounds while keeping the result more restrained. Cartoon-led artwork can support brighter palettes too, particularly for gifts or rooms where a playful style fits.

    Frequently asked questions

When is Notting Hill Carnival 2026?

The main Carnival weekend is Sunday 30 and Monday 31 August 2026, with additional Saturday programming on 29 August. Check the official Carnival website for the current schedule and visitor information.

Can I choose the background colour of a custom pet portrait?

Background and colour options depend on the chosen design. Use the current product page to check available choices, and review your Artwork Preview before printing.

What colour background works with a black dog?

A lighter or brighter contrasting background can help dark fur, ears and facial shape remain visible. Avoid backgrounds that are so close to the coat colour that the silhouette disappears.

What colour background works with a white or cream pet?

Medium or darker colours often create clearer separation around pale fur. The best choice still depends on the portrait style and the room where the artwork will be displayed.

Will I see the colours before my portrait is printed?

Yes. Paw & Glory custom portrait orders receive an Artwork Preview before printing, allowing you to review the finished composition and request changes before final approval.

Borrow the confidence, not the costume

The most useful visual lesson from Carnival weekend is not that every surface needs every colour. It is that colour can be deliberate, joyful and unapologetic.

For a bold personalised pet portrait, keep the animal recognisable, choose the palette with purpose and let one or two strong decisions do the work. Browse our pet portraits to compare styles.
