Photographs of people with their pets often become favourites because they show the relationship rather than simply the animal on its own. The difficult part is getting an image that feels natural when everybody knows a camera is pointed at them. These five approaches keep the session simple.
Ask them to stroke the pet, look at them, hold a favourite toy or walk slowly together. Interaction usually produces a more believable expression than repeatedly saying “smile”.

Choose open shade outdoors or position the pair near a window indoors. Check that the pet's eyes are visible as well as the person's face. Very bright backlighting can make one subject disappear while the other looks perfectly exposed.
Have the person sit, kneel or place a small pet safely beside them. Reducing the height gap often improves composition faster than changing lenses, camera settings or invoking the mysterious powers of “portrait mode”.
Once the expected camera-facing image is done, continue for a few moments. People relax, pets move naturally and the expressions often become much more characteristic.
Photograph a close face-to-face frame, a wider environmental image and a few candid interactions. Different pictures serve different purposes. A wide photograph may tell the best story while a closer one may be a stronger reference for personalised artwork.
For a custom pet portrait, keep at least one separate, clear photograph of the pet's face as well. A lovely family photograph and a technically useful pet reference do not always have to be the same image.
