How To Make Your Home Pet Friendly

November 22, 2021 3 min read

As members of your family, it’s important to consider your pet’s needs in your home. After all, they deserve a comfortable and safe home, too! Keep reading to see a few of our suggestions to make your home pet friendly.

Things To Consider

When setting up your space to accommodate your four-legged companion, think about what may be dangerous to them in their surroundings. As silly as it sounds, a great way to ensure your pet is safe is by getting down on all fours to see things from their perspective. You should do this, looking around to see what your pet could come across while wandering around. There are a few things to look for specifically, such as:

Keep your eyes peeled for potential choking hazards.

It’s important to be mindful of things that could be picked up by your furry friend and swallowed that may cause digestion issues. Additionally, consider keeping blind cords up high where they can’t reach.

Keep harmful food and medication in a place that is not accessible for your pet.

If there is something for your dog to eat lying around, they will! So, it’s best to keep things tucked away and in a place that cannot be found by your four-legged companion.

Double-check that your indoor plants are pet safe.

There are quite a few indoor plants that can pose a risk to your pet if they consume parts of it. It’s best to avoid lilies, amaryllis, poinsettia and aloe vera. However, this is not an extensive list of all that you should avoid.

Keep your toilet lid shut.

Your pet may confuse your toilet as a water bowl, so it’s best to keep the lid shut to ensure accidents don’t happen

Create Their Own Space

Pets are intrinsically curious, so it’s a good idea to carve out a space that is designated for them, that way they are more likely to seek comfort in their space rather than search for a new one.

Consider creating a play zone for your pet, that is just for them! By creating a designated play space for your pet, they learn that it is suitable for play and where they can go when needing some rest. Keep their toys close by this space, stored so that they can see they are there without them being scattered everywhere. It’s best to avoid letting your pet roam around your house, as they may get a little “too curious” and play with something you would rather them not.

In their space, you should include a bed made specifically for them! This could include a  customised blanket and  customised pillow from  Paw and Glory, with a picture of them or their friends.

Look for a pet bed that is made from high-quality materials that will last and become a place for them to rest and unwind. It’s important to designate a bed for your pet, especially if you wish to keep them off your furniture. While some pets enjoy laying on the cool tile or cosy carpet, it’s nice to have a bed for them to seek refuge in as well. Put up a canvas in their space, I’m sure they will be over the moon to see a pet portrait with their owners!

Consider Grooming Them At Home

As an active member of your family, it’s also important to keep up with a hygiene routine for your pet. Keeping your furry friend groomed provides numerous benefits such as:

  • Prevent Future Issues: It’s important to do things like brushing your pet’s teeth, wiping away tear stains, and combing out tangles as they all help to avoid bigger issues that could occur in the future if it is avoided.
  • Maintaining a Clean Home: Not only does grooming help keep your pet looking the best, but it also helps keep your home clean! The more hair that you capture while brushing or washing your pet, the less hair that will be left all over your couch and rug.
  • Bonding With Your Pet: When you opt-out of sending your pet to the groomer, you get great quality time with them. Grooming builds your pet’s trust and strengthens your bond with them.

If you are grooming from home, consider picking up an  ultra-absorbent towel such as our  customised towel from  Paw and Glory.
