You have chosen the pet portrait, found a photograph and reached the upload stage. Before sending the file, spend a minute checking the image itself. Ten small checks can prevent the most common reference-photo problems.
Open the image at full size. The face should look reasonably sharp, not merely acceptable as a thumbnail.

If your chosen portrait needs a front-facing view, make sure the eyes and surrounding markings are visible. Hair, deep shadow or motion blur can hide useful detail.
Check that the photograph has not cropped through the ears or hidden their shape. If one ear is naturally folded or sits differently, that is useful character rather than a flaw.
Look for chest patches, facial splits, eyebrow markings, scars or other features that make the animal recognisable.
A strong filter or unusual indoor lighting can shift coat and eye colours. Keep the unfiltered original where possible.
Very close wide-angle photographs can distort a nose or forehead. A natural eye-level or gently turned angle is usually easier to interpret.
Use the original photograph from the phone or camera if possible rather than a screenshot or downloaded social-media copy.
Hands, toys, furniture or another animal may cover part of the face or markings. If your favourite image has an obstruction, keep a second clear reference available.
Technical quality matters, but recognition matters too. Choose a photograph you actually associate with the animal rather than the most formal pose in the camera roll.
Choose one or two supporting images showing the pet from a similar period. They can clarify details that the main photograph does not show.
Once the photograph passes the practical checks, browse custom pet portraits, framed pet portraits and canvas portraits. Use the current product page for the latest upload and personalisation requirements.
