  • Multiple Pet Portrait Layouts: How to Arrange Two, Three or More Pets

    August 25, 2026 2 min read

For a multiple-pet portrait, the best layout depends on the number of animals, their relative size, the quality of each reference photo and where the finished artwork will be displayed. The goal is not merely to fit everybody in. It is to make the group look deliberate rather than like six pets have been squeezed into a lift.

Two pets: symmetry is easy, but not compulsory

With two pets, a balanced side-by-side layout is usually the simplest option. Similar head sizes and eye levels create a formal, tidy composition. That works especially well for paired royal portraits or clean modern artwork.

If one pet is naturally much larger than the other, however, forcing identical scale can look odd. A large dog and a small cat do not need to become suspiciously equal-sized citizens. Keeping some sense of their real proportions often makes the portrait feel more believable.

Three pets: build a triangle rather than a row

Three pets can work in a straight line, but a shallow triangular arrangement often feels more natural. One face can sit slightly higher or more central, with the other two balancing it. This avoids creating an overly wide composition and keeps attention near the centre.

Choose the central position deliberately. It might go to the largest pet, the pet with the clearest forward-facing photo, or simply the animal whose expression anchors the group best.

Four or more pets: consistency becomes more important

As the number of pets rises, the differences between source photos become more obvious. Try to provide images with reasonably similar perspective and clarity. One pet photographed from floor level and another photographed from directly above can make the final group harder to balance.

If the pets were never photographed together, that is not necessarily a problem. Separate reference photos can be used when they clearly show each animal. Our guide to combining separate pet photos into one portrait explains what helps.

Think about head size and visual weight

Dark-coated animals, very fluffy pets and elaborate costumes can carry more visual weight than a small pale face against a light background. A good layout balances more than physical size.

When reviewing a proof, check whether one pet dominates because it is larger, darker, sharper or placed too centrally. Small scale adjustments can make the whole group feel more coherent.

    Portrait or landscape?

Two pets can often work in either orientation. Three or more usually benefit from a wider layout, although stacked or staggered compositions can still work when wall space is narrow.

Before ordering, measure the intended display area. A beautiful four-pet composition is less useful if the only available wall is the width of a tea towel.

    Photo checklist for each pet

    • Eyes and facial markings are visible.
    • The photo is large enough to inspect detail.
    • The head angle is compatible with the intended layout.
    • Coat colour is reasonably accurate.
    • You have a supporting photo if the main image hides an important marking.

If you are using several photos of the same animal, see our multiple reference photo guide.

    Choosing the number of pets

Paw & Glory has dedicated two-pet portrait and three-pet portrait options. Whichever format you choose, the useful question is not “can they all fit?” but “will every pet still be recognisable and properly represented?”
