  • Ginger Cat Appreciation Day: 7 Photo Ideas for a Custom Cat Portrait

    September 01, 2026 6 min read

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day falls on 1 September, which is a perfectly respectable excuse to take another photograph of the orange cat already occupying most of your camera roll.

If you are thinking about turning one of those photographs into a custom cat portrait, the useful question is not whether the cat looks majestic. Naturally they do. The useful question is whether the photo shows the features that make them recognisably yours: eye colour, face shape, coat markings, expression and the particular shade of ginger that cameras occasionally decide is either beige or radioactive.

Here are seven photo ideas that work for Ginger Cat Appreciation Day and can also give an artist a strong reference image for a personalised portrait.

    1. Take a simple window-light portrait

Soft daylight from a window is one of the easiest ways to photograph an orange or ginger coat accurately. Position your cat near the light rather than directly in harsh sun, then photograph at roughly eye level.

Try to keep both eyes sharp and avoid using a strong phone filter. Warm filters can make a ginger coat look dramatically more orange than it really is, which is charming for social media but less useful when the photograph becomes an artwork reference.

A plain wall, sofa or curtain behind the cat is enough. The background does not need to be interesting. The cat has already taken that role.

    2. Capture the expression you actually recognise

The technically best photograph is not always the right portrait reference. If your cat normally has a slightly unimpressed expression, a rare wide-eyed photograph may not feel like them at all.

Choose an image that captures the face you know. That might be relaxed, curious, serious, sleepy or mildly offended by household management.

For a custom portrait, recognisable expression matters because it helps the finished artwork feel personal rather than simply looking like a generic orange cat.

    3. Photograph the coat in neutral light

Ginger cats can range from pale cream and apricot to deeper orange and red tones. Artificial indoor lighting can shift those colours considerably, particularly under very warm bulbs.

If coat colour matters to the portrait, take at least one reference photograph in daylight. Include the chest, forehead and any lighter areas around the muzzle so the natural colour variation is visible.

This is especially helpful for cats with tabby stripes, white bibs, socks or small markings that are easy to lose in an overexposed photograph.

    4. Get a clear front-facing headshot

A straightforward head-and-shoulders photograph is extremely useful for portrait artwork. Sit or crouch at the cat's eye level and leave a little space around the ears rather than cropping tightly into the head.

Make sure the nose, eyes and ears are all reasonably sharp. You do not need professional equipment. A modern phone in good light is usually more useful than an expensive camera used from the other side of a dark room.

If your cat will not look directly at the camera, a slight three-quarter angle can work beautifully and often feels more natural.

    5. Include one side-profile photograph

Even if the main portrait reference is front-facing, a side view can reveal details that another photograph misses: muzzle shape, ear profile, coat length and markings along the cheek or neck.

This does not mean you need to organise a complete feline passport office. Two or three clear views are normally far more useful than twenty blurry near-duplicates.

If you are ordering a custom pet portrait, keep the strongest image as your main photo and retain extra reference images in case a detail needs clarifying.

    6. Photograph a favourite everyday pose

Not every portrait needs to begin with a formal seated photograph. If your cat is known for curling on one particular chair, sitting on the windowsill or supervising the kitchen from an unreasonable height, photograph that routine.

A familiar pose can be especially useful when choosing a more modern or relaxed artwork style. It captures personality without requiring props or elaborate staging.

Try to take the photograph when there is enough light to preserve facial detail. A meaningful pose is less useful as a portrait reference if the face has become four mysterious pixels near a radiator.

    7. Take one photograph with room around the cat

For the main artwork reference, detail is important. But also take one wider photograph with space around the whole head or body.

This gives you more flexibility when choosing the final crop and format. A photograph cropped tightly inside the ears cannot later recover the missing ear tips through optimism.

Leaving some space is particularly useful if you are considering a framed print, canvas or artwork design that needs more breathing room around the pet.

What makes a good ginger cat portrait photo?

A strong reference image usually has five things:

    • Clear eyes: preferably both visible and reasonably sharp.
    • Natural coat colour: daylight is helpful for ginger and cream tones.
    • Visible markings: stripes, white patches, freckles and distinctive features should not disappear into shadow.
    • A recognisable expression: choose the cat you know, not simply the photograph with the tidiest background.
    • Enough resolution: use the original phone or camera file where possible rather than a compressed screenshot.

Our custom pet portraits from photo guide goes into more detail on lighting, angles, cropping and choosing the strongest reference image.

How to photograph ginger fur without losing the detail

Orange coats can lose texture in two opposite ways. Very bright light can wash out pale fur, while dark indoor photos can merge stripes and shadows together.

Soft indirect daylight is usually the safest option. Tap the cat's face on your phone screen to focus and expose for the fur rather than the bright window behind them. If the photograph looks extremely yellow or orange, turn off any strong filter or automatic warm effect before deciding whether the colour is accurate.

For darker ginger cats, check that the eyes and forehead markings remain visible. For pale ginger or cream cats, avoid blowing out the lighter areas around the muzzle and chest.

Should you use a funny photo for a custom cat portrait?

You can. The best source photo depends on the artwork style you want.

A funny expression can work brilliantly with a royal, character-led or playful portrait. For minimalist or more classic artwork, a cleaner headshot may give a calmer result.

If you are unsure, our pet portrait style quiz helps narrow down styles according to expression, room, colour and how formal you want the finished piece to feel.

Can you use more than one photograph?

It is useful to have several good photographs available even when one image is the primary reference. The main photo should establish the pose and expression, while additional photos can help clarify eye colour, coat markings or details hidden in the main image.

Avoid choosing five completely different photographs and expecting them to become one physically impossible cat. Pick a clear primary image first, then use the others as supporting reference.

What if the background is messy?

Do not reject an excellent cat photo just because the room behind it contains a laundry basket, charging cable or another object documenting ordinary human defeat.

For custom portrait artwork, the pet itself is usually the important part. Sharp facial detail, natural colour and a useful angle matter far more than whether the original photograph was taken against a studio background.

Our guide to choosing a pet portrait background colour explains how coat colour and room décor can guide the finished artwork instead.

    Frequently asked questions

When is Ginger Cat Appreciation Day?

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day is observed on 1 September.

Can I use a phone photo for a custom cat portrait?

Yes. A sharp, well-lit phone photograph can make an excellent reference. Use the original file where possible rather than a screenshot or heavily compressed copy.

What lighting is best for photographing a ginger cat?

Soft natural daylight is usually ideal because it preserves coat texture and gives a more reliable view of orange, cream and white colouring.

Should my cat look directly at the camera?

Not necessarily. A front-facing photograph is very useful, but a natural three-quarter angle can also work well if the eyes, face shape and markings are clear.

Will I see my custom cat portrait before printing?

Yes. Paw & Glory sends an Artwork Preview before printing so you can review the portrait and request changes before final approval.

Use the day to get one genuinely useful photograph

Ginger Cat Appreciation Day does not require balloons, costumes or persuading a cat to cooperate with a themed photo shoot they did not request.

One clear photograph in good light is enough. Capture the expression, coat colour and markings you recognise, keep the original file, and you have an image that works now and can later become a personalised cat portrait.
