  • National Dog Week: 7 Meaningful Ways to Celebrate

    September 04, 2024 5 min read

    National Dog Week gives dogs something most awareness days do not: an entire week in which humans can attempt to organise their appreciation into something more useful than a hashtag.

    The observance dates back to 1928, when it was established by Captain Will Judy, publisher of Dog World magazine and an advocate for kinder treatment of dogs. In 2026, National Dog Week runs from 20–26 September.

    A week is rather handy. Instead of trying to manufacture one enormous celebratory event, you can use it to notice the ordinary things that make your dog recognisably yours: the expression, the walk, the favourite place, the ear that refuses to match the other one.

    What is National Dog Week?

    National Dog Week was established in 1928 by Captain Will Judy. The American Kennel Club's history of National Dog Week describes Judy as a First World War veteran, ordained minister and long-time publisher of Dog World who promoted kindness and respect towards dogs.

    The dates move from year to year. In 2026, pet-awareness calendars including Pet Sitters International list National Dog Week as 20–26 September.

    National Dog Week vs National Dog Day

    They are separate observances. National Dog Day is held on 26 August each year, while National Dog Week takes place in September.

    The useful difference is practical rather than philosophical. A single day lends itself to one outing, photograph or act of support. A whole week gives you time to notice, record and enjoy more of the everyday details that usually disappear into routine.

    Day 1: Take one straightforward portrait

    Start the week with a photograph that simply looks like your dog.

    Use soft natural light, get roughly to eye level and focus on the eyes. You do not need props, an elaborate setting or a dog who has suddenly developed a professional understanding of posing. A familiar expression in good light is more valuable than a complicated scene.

    Our pet portrait photo guide covers light, focus and framing if you want a more reliable result than pointing the phone vaguely in the dog's direction and hoping for character.

    Day 2: Photograph the details you would recognise anywhere

    Faces get most of the attention, but likeness often lives in smaller details.

    Take photographs of the ears, paws, tail, coat markings, nose or any feature that is especially distinctive. If your dog has brindle stripes, merle patches, spots or unusual facial markings, our guide to photographing complex coats explains how to preserve those patterns clearly.

    These images do not need to be beautiful. They are a record of the things you know without thinking about them.

    Day 3: Recreate an old photograph

    Find a puppy photograph, an early adoption-day picture or simply an older image taken somewhere you still visit. Recreate it as closely as practical.

    The appeal is not perfect matching. It is seeing what has changed and what has not: the greyer muzzle, the same head tilt, the garden shrub that has apparently experienced its own significant personal growth.

    Keep both versions together. Over time, paired photographs often say more than another hundred unrelated camera-roll images.

    Day 4: Build a small dog archive

    Most people have plenty of photographs and very little organisation. National Dog Week is a decent excuse to fix a tiny part of that.

    Create one album containing the images and videos you would genuinely hate to lose. Include a few ordinary things as well as the obvious favourites: sleeping positions, walks, greetings at the door, favourite toys and the strange domestic routines that make no sense outside the household.

    If you are choosing a single image for artwork, our guide to choosing the best pet photo for a portrait helps compare expression, sharpness and useful detail.

    Day 5: Let the week include dogs beyond your own

    One of Will Judy's recurring themes was kinder treatment of dogs. A modern way to honour that is to check what a reputable rescue or welfare organisation currently needs and support it in a way that suits you.

    That could be a donation, volunteering, fundraising or another form of practical help listed by the organisation itself. Needs change, so check current guidance rather than assuming a rescue wants whatever happens to be in the back of the cupboard.

    If adoption is something you are considering, treat it as the long-term decision it is. An awareness week can start the research. It should not compress the decision into seven days.

    Day 6: Give your dog an extremely normal good day

    Not every celebration needs to produce content.

    Choose something your dog already enjoys: a familiar walk, extra time in the garden, a quiet afternoon together or whatever counts as an excellent day in your particular household. The best version is the one designed around the actual dog rather than an internet list of activities compiled by somebody who has never met them.

    Take a photograph if you want one. Do not turn the photograph into the reason the day happened.

    Day 7: Choose one thing worth keeping

    At the end of the week, pick one photograph, video or little record that feels especially representative.

    You might simply print the photograph. You might add it to a favourite album. Or, if it is the sort of image you would like to see every day, it can become a personalised pet portrait.

    The useful test is not whether the photograph is technically perfect. Ask whether the eyes, markings and expression make you think, immediately, “that is them”.

    Seven easy National Dog Week photo prompts

    • Day 1: one clear eye-level portrait;
    • Day 2: a distinctive detail, such as ears, paws or markings;
    • Day 3: a recreated older photograph;
    • Day 4: a normal moment at home;
    • Day 5: a favourite walking place;
    • Day 6: a photograph with their person;
    • Day 7: the expression everybody in the family recognises.

    There is no requirement to complete all seven. Your dog will not be auditing participation.

    Frequently asked questions

    When is National Dog Week in 2026?

    National Dog Week runs from 20–26 September in 2026.

    Who started National Dog Week?

    National Dog Week was established in 1928 by Captain Will Judy, publisher of Dog World magazine and an advocate for kinder treatment of dogs.

    Is National Dog Week the same as National Dog Day?

    No. National Dog Day is observed annually on 26 August. National Dog Week is a separate September observance.

    How can I celebrate National Dog Week without buying anything?

    Spend deliberate time with your dog, take and organise photographs, revisit favourite places or memories, and consider supporting a reputable dog welfare organisation. None of those requires turning the week into a shopping event.

    What kind of photograph should I take during National Dog Week?

    A clear photograph showing a familiar expression is a strong place to start. Soft natural light, visible eyes and a camera position around the dog's eye level usually help.

    Can National Dog Week include remembering a dog who has died?

    Yes. The week can be used to organise old photographs, revisit favourite memories or keep a particular image somewhere more permanent.

    Seven days is enough time to do something more interesting than post “happy National Dog Week” seven times. Notice the dog you actually live with, keep a few details properly, and let at least one day remain pleasingly unproductive.
