  • How to Choose a Memorial Pet Portrait Style: Simple, Modern or Themed?

    March 14, 2023 4 min read

    The right memorial pet portrait style is the one that keeps your pet recognisable while matching how you want to remember them. A simple portrait can put all the attention on the face and expression. A modern style can bring in stronger colour and graphic detail. A themed or royal portrait can reflect a playful, dramatic or regal side of their personality. None is automatically more meaningful than the others.

    For a personalised pet portrait made after a loss, start with likeness and memory rather than whatever style happens to be fashionable. The artwork should still feel like your dog, cat or other companion when you see it across the room.

    Start with the version of your pet you want to remember

    Before choosing an art style, decide which part of your pet's character matters most to you. Was it a particular expression, their calm senior face, a permanently mischievous look, or the way they sat for photographs?

    That decision is often more useful than asking which memorial style is 'best'. If the expression is the important part, a quieter composition may suit it. If your pet was known for being theatrical or ridiculous in the best possible way, a themed portrait may feel more personal.

    Simple and minimal memorial pet portraits

    A simple or minimal style usually works well when you want the pet to remain the obvious focus. Less visual competition around the face can make small markings, ear shape and expression easier to notice.

    This approach can suit:

    • people who prefer understated home decor;
    • portraits intended to sit with family photographs;
    • older reference photos where the face is usable but the original setting is distracting;
    • owners who want the remembrance to feel personal rather than ceremonial.

    Simple does not have to mean plain or generic. Background colour, crop, framing and the amount of visible body can still change the character of the finished artwork.

    Modern and graphic styles

    A modern pet portrait can use cleaner shapes, stronger colour or a more editorial composition. This can work particularly well when the pet had a bold personality or when the artwork needs to suit a contemporary room.

    The useful question is whether the design supports the likeness. Strong colour should not make important coat markings harder to read, and a stylised background should not compete with the eyes and face.

    If you are comparing broader options, our pet portrait styles UK guide explains how different looks affect the finished piece.

    Royal, Renaissance and other themed memorial portraits

    A themed memorial portrait can be a good choice when costume, humour or a grander visual style genuinely reflects the pet you remember. Some owners want a quiet tribute. Others would rather remember the dog who behaved as if the entire house belonged to them. Both are valid.

    For a royal or costume-based portrait, check that:

    • the face remains the most recognisable part of the artwork;
    • the costume does not cover distinctive markings you want to preserve;
    • the pose and expression still feel appropriate to your pet;
    • the style is something you will be comfortable displaying long term.

    If you like this direction, our royal pet portraits UK guide covers Renaissance-inspired artwork in more detail.

    Does the photo matter more than the style?

    Usually, yes. A strong pet portrait from photo starts with useful visual information. Art style can change colour, background, costume and overall mood, but it cannot reliably recreate details that are absent from every reference image.

    Prioritise a photograph that shows the eyes, ear shape, muzzle and distinctive markings. If the favourite image is old, small or slightly blurred, do not automatically discard it. Read our guide to a pet memorial portrait from an old photo before deciding.

    If no single image shows everything, one main reference plus a few supporting photographs can help. Our guide to using multiple photos for a memorial pet portrait explains how to keep those references consistent.

    How much should the original background influence the style?

    Not every memorial portrait needs to reproduce the room, garden, sofa or pavement visible in the source photograph. Sometimes that setting is part of the memory. Sometimes it is simply where the camera happened to be.

    A clean background can make the portrait feel calmer, while a home, outdoor or themed setting can add context. If you are unsure, compare the options in our pet portrait background guide.

    Should a memorial portrait look formal?

    Only if formal feels right for your pet and for you. A memorial portrait does not need dates, solemn colours, wings, halos or a traditional tribute layout. It can be elegant, funny, modern, regal, minimal or simply a faithful portrait from a favourite photograph.

    If you do want a name, dates or a short message, see our guide to what to include on a pet memorial portrait.

    Think about where the finished artwork will live

    Style is easier to choose when you know roughly where the portrait will be displayed. A bold themed piece can work as a focal point, while a quieter design may sit more naturally beside family photographs or existing art.

    Frame colour can also change how formal or contemporary the portrait feels. Our pet portrait frame colour guide compares black, white and wood options.

    Memorial portrait style checklist

    • Does the style keep the face and expression easy to recognise?
    • Does it reflect the personality or memory you actually want to preserve?
    • Will important coat markings remain visible?
    • Does the background support rather than overpower the pet?
    • Does the style suit the room or space where the artwork may be displayed?
    • If using an old photo, is there enough reliable detail to work from?
    • If using several photos, have you chosen one main reference?

    Use the proof stage to judge likeness, not just style

    Paw & Glory's current custom portrait process includes an artwork preview before production and artwork edits before approval. For memorial artwork, review the proof for the details that make the pet feel recognisable: eyes, ears, markings, expression, crop and the balance between the pet and the chosen style.
