How One Very Good Nurse
Started A Business.

Paw & Glory didn't begin with a business plan. It began with a phone call, a dog named Molly, and a slightly damp phone call that followed.

My mum was telling me about Molly — her dog, recently gone, and very much missed. Somewhere in that conversation she said something that stuck with me:

"Molly was always the nurse, wasn't she. Looking after everyone."

She wasn't speaking figuratively. Molly had a habit of turning up exactly when someone in the house wasn't feeling their best, and sitting with them until they were. As far as my mum was concerned, that dog had a bedside manner most GPs would envy.

So I made her a portrait. Molly, hand-illustrated, in full nurse's uniform — because if you're going to capture a dog's personality properly, you may as well commit to the bit. I sent it to my mum expecting nothing more than a nice reaction, and possibly a slightly damp phone call.

I did not expect it to become a business.

But it turns out I wasn't the only person who thought their pet deserved to be taken far more seriously than the average passport photo suggests. One portrait became a handful for friends. A handful became requests from strangers. Requests became, somewhat alarmingly, an actual company — one that's since hand-illustrated tens of thousands of pets, each interpreted with whatever quiet dignity (or, more often, entirely unearned grandeur) their owner always knew they deserved.

What hasn't changed since that first nurse's uniform is the standard. Every portrait is illustrated by a real artist, reviewed before it goes anywhere near a printer, and revised until it's actually right — not just finished. If it doesn't make you laugh, well up, or immediately send a photo to everyone you know, we're not done yet.

We're still a small team that genuinely cares about every pet that lands in our inbox — mischievous puppies, elderly rescue dogs, opinionated cats, and the horse that's been someone's best friend for twenty years. We still work by the same principle Molly taught us without meaning to: pets aren't just pets. They're the ones who show up. The least we can do is illustrate them like it.
