Christmas with pets is rarely calm, beautifully staged or remotely similar to the adverts. There is usually wrapping paper in the wrong mouth, a suspicious interest in the food and at least one photograph involving an animal looking deeply unimpressed. That is rather the point.

Here are a few simple ways to make Christmas feel special for the people and pets you share it with, without turning the day into a military operation.

Choose something you can repeat every year: a walk in a favourite place, a family photo with the pet, a new decoration featuring them or simply setting aside time when nobody is rushing to the next obligation.
