  • World Animal Day Ideas for Pet Owners: 8 Meaningful Ways to Celebrate

    September 04, 2024 5 min read

World Animal Day can be a useful excuse to do something thoughtful for the animals already in your life, without turning the day into another shopping event. Take a photograph you will want later, organise the ones you already have, learn something about the animal you share your home with, support a reputable animal organisation in the way it actually asks for help, or create a keepsake from a favourite image.

Here are eight practical World Animal Day ideas for pet owners, including options that cost nothing and do not require persuading a dog to wear ceremonial clothing.

    1. Take one genuinely useful photo of your pet

Most camera rolls contain hundreds of pet photos and surprisingly few where the eyes, markings and expression are all clear at once. Use the day to take one deliberate photograph in soft natural light.

Get close enough to see the face, keep the camera near the pet's eye level where practical and avoid strong backlighting. If the animal will not sit still, do not turn the exercise into an obedience examination. A short burst of relaxed photographs is usually more useful.

Our pet portrait from photo guide explains what makes a photograph particularly useful if you may later want artwork made from it.

    2. Photograph the details you would otherwise forget

The obvious portrait is only part of a pet's visual story. Take a few photographs of the details that make them recognisable to you: a particular ear, paw markings, an unusual patch of fur, a favourite sleeping position or the expression used while pretending dinner has not happened.

These images can become useful reference material later, especially if your favourite front-facing photo does not show every distinctive marking clearly.

    3. Make a small pet photo archive

Create one folder for your strongest pet photographs rather than relying on an endless camera roll and the optimistic belief that you will remember where everything is.

Keep original files where possible, label folders by pet and year, and include photographs from other family members. If some of your best images only survive in messages or social media, our guide to screenshots and WhatsApp pet photos explains how to assess them.

    4. Record your pet at their current life stage

Puppies, kittens, adult pets and seniors all change over time. A simple set of current photographs gives you a record of how the animal looks now, even if nothing feels particularly different from last month.

Include a clear face, full-body view and one image showing scale beside something familiar. For a recently arrived puppy or adopted dog, our new puppy and new dog portrait guide has more advice on photographing an animal while they are still settling in.

    5. Learn what makes your pet easier to photograph

Different animals require different amounts of patience. Dark coats need enough light to keep the eyes and face visible. Energetic dogs may be easier to photograph after some movement rather than at the exact moment they have decided the garden is a racetrack.

For dark-coated pets, see our black dog and cat photography guide. For dogs who regard sitting still as an infringement of civil liberties, use our energetic dog photo guide.

    6. Support an animal organisation in a useful way

If you want World Animal Day to include something beyond your own household, look for a reputable local rescue, shelter or animal charity and check what it currently says it needs. That might be a donation, an item from a published wish list, volunteering, fostering information or simply sharing a specific appeal.

Following the organisation's own current guidance is more useful than guessing what it needs and arriving with a heroic quantity of unsuitable objects.

    7. Celebrate more than dogs and cats

Pet memories are not limited to the species that dominate the internet. Rabbits, horses, birds and other companion animals can be just as central to family life, and their photographs deserve the same care.

If you are considering artwork, our guide to which pets can be turned into a portrait explains how reference photographs vary between animals.

    8. Turn a favourite photo into something permanent

If you already have the photograph you love, you may decide to use it for a personalised pet portrait. The useful starting point is still the same: choose the image because it looks and feels like your pet, not because it satisfies an imaginary standard of photographic perfection.

If several photographs are contenders, compare them using our guide to choosing the best existing pet photo.

What if you have more than one pet?

You can document each animal individually as well as together. Separate photographs are often valuable because the strongest expression from one pet rarely occurs at the precise second every other animal has also decided to cooperate.

Our multi-pet portrait guide covers choosing compatible photographs when several pets are involved.

What if World Animal Day brings back memories of a pet who has died?

You do not have to make the day celebratory. Looking through photographs, saving a favourite image or doing nothing with it at all are equally reasonable choices. If you do want a visible remembrance, a pet memorial portrait is one option, but it should suit the person and the memory rather than the calendar.

World Animal Day checklist for pet owners

    • Take one clear, current photograph.
    • Capture a few distinctive markings or habits.
    • Save your strongest pet photographs in one organised folder.
    • Keep original files where possible.
    • Include other family members' photographs.
    • Check what a reputable animal organisation actually needs before helping.
    • Document every pet, not only the easiest one to photograph.
    • Choose keepsakes because they mean something, not because the date says you should.

    Frequently asked questions

Do I need to buy something for World Animal Day?

No. Taking photographs, organising memories, spending time with a pet or supporting an animal organisation in a useful way can all mark the day without buying anything.

Can an ordinary phone photo be kept for a future pet portrait?

Yes. A clear phone photograph can be an excellent reference when the face, eyes, colouring and distinctive markings are visible.

What if my favourite photo is not technically perfect?

Keep it. Emotional value and useful visual detail are different things. If you later want artwork made from the image, supporting photographs may help clarify markings, colour or shape that the favourite picture does not show well.

Should I photograph several pets together?

It is worth trying, but also take clear individual photographs. You will then have a stronger record of each animal even if the group photo contains the usual negotiations.

A useful date is better than a decorative one

World Animal Day does not need an elaborate ritual. Use it to preserve one good memory, improve the pet photo archive you already have or do something genuinely useful for animals. That will still matter after the themed social posts have disappeared.
