The best reference photo for a Halloween pet portrait is usually the one that shows the pet most clearly, not the one with the most Halloween decorations. Visible eyes, useful coat detail and a recognisable expression give the artwork a stronger starting point. The seasonal theme can be added around that.
Check the eyes, nose, ears, face shape and distinctive markings. If those details disappear when you zoom in, try to find a clearer original or a different frame from the same set of photos.
Use the full pet portrait photo guide if you are comparing several images.
Halloween artwork can be dramatic, but likeness still matters. A familiar head tilt, serious stare or ridiculous grin may do more to make the finished piece feel like your pet than a complicated seasonal pose.
If you already have a clear normal photograph, it can often be a better reference than a dark, blurred Halloween snapshot. The portrait concept can use seasonal colours, background ideas or character styling without requiring the source image itself to contain a costume.
This is especially useful for pets that simply do not have a Halloween costume photo. There is no need to manufacture one solely to create artwork.
Low evening light can produce dramatic photographs while hiding one side of the face. For reference purposes, an evenly readable face is usually more useful than a moody image where half the markings have vanished into darkness.
If the pet has a dark coat, use our black dog and cat photo guide.
Eye-level or slightly above-eye-level photographs often make facial proportions easier to read. Very high or very low angles can distort the head and body, particularly with close phone photographs.
A close headshot can work well when the portrait itself will be head-and-shoulders. If you want more of the body included, choose a source image that actually contains it rather than expecting missing anatomy to emerge from seasonal optimism.
Strong filters can change coat colour, eye colour and contrast. Message apps and screenshots can reduce detail too. If you have the original photograph, use it.
If the original is unavailable, see our screenshot and WhatsApp photo guide.
Once you know which image gives the strongest likeness, decide whether the finished artwork should be gothic, autumnal, playful, dark or costume-led. This keeps the seasonal concept from dictating a poor reference image.

A seasonal portrait can be imaginative. The source photograph still has the boring but essential job of telling the artist what your pet actually looks like.
