Best Photos for Pet Portraits: A Simple Selection Checklist

You may have thousands of pet photos and still struggle to choose one for a custom portrait. The best reference image is not necessarily the cutest photograph. It is the one that gives the artwork enough clear information to preserve the pet’s likeness.

Can you clearly see the eyes?

Eyes should be in focus and visible rather than hidden by shadow, hair or glare. They are one of the most important parts of recognisable facial expression.

Are the ears and head shape visible?

Avoid photos where ears are cropped out or flattened by an unusual camera angle unless that appearance is genuinely typical of the pet.

Can you see distinctive markings?

Patches, muzzle colour, nose markings and coat patterns help identify the animal. Good lighting is especially important for black or very dark coats.

Is the angle natural?

Eye-level or slightly angled portraits usually give more balanced proportions than images taken directly from above or extremely close with a wide-angle lens.

Is the image large enough?

Use the original camera file when possible. A screenshot of a small social-media image may have lost useful detail through compression.

Does the expression feel like your pet?

A technically perfect photo with an unfamiliar expression may be less satisfying than a slightly less polished image that captures their normal character.

What if the best photo has a messy background?

For many custom portrait styles, the background can be replaced or simplified. Prioritise the quality of the pet itself rather than whether the laundry basket made an unfortunate cameo.
