Family and Pet Group Photos: Do's and Don'ts

Adding a pet to a family photograph improves the emotional value and dramatically reduces the likelihood that everybody will look at the camera at the same time. A little planning helps.

Do Choose a Familiar Setting

Home, garden or another familiar place can make the pet easier to settle. Choose somewhere with enough room for people to sit or stand without crowding the animal.

Don't Force a Perfect Pose

Some of the strongest family-and-pet photographs show interaction rather than every face pointing towards the lens. Let people stroke, hold or look at the pet naturally where appropriate.

Do Use Soft, Even Light

Window light or open shade is usually easier than harsh direct sun. Check that both human faces and the pet's eyes are visible.

Don't Put the Pet Too Far Below Everyone

Ask family members to sit or kneel when sensible. Bringing faces closer in height often creates a more connected composition.

Do Take Bursts or Several Frames

Pets move, people blink and somebody will inevitably choose the crucial second to inspect the ceiling. Take several versions rather than betting everything on one frame.

Don't Use Digital Zoom Unless You Have To

Move closer or crop later where possible. Keeping the original full-resolution file gives you more flexibility.

Do Take a Separate Pet Reference Photo

If the family image may later become personalised artwork, take one clear photograph of the pet on its own as well. That can preserve useful facial detail even if the group photo is your favourite composition.

Do Keep the Session Short

Stop if the pet becomes stressed or restless. A relaxed imperfect photograph is usually more valuable than a technically neat image produced after everybody has lost patience.
