How to Write a Funny Limerick About Your Pet

Pets already provide most of the material required for a limerick: odd habits, misplaced confidence and an absolute refusal to respect property law. All you need to do is squeeze the chaos into five lines.

The Basic Limerick Shape

A traditional limerick has five lines. Lines one, two and five rhyme with one another, while lines three and four share a different rhyme. The rhythm is usually bouncy rather than solemn, which is convenient when the subject is a cat asleep in a fruit bowl.

Start With One Specific Habit

Do not try to summarise the pet's entire personality. Pick one recognisable behaviour: stealing socks, guarding the sofa, waking everyone at dawn or appearing whenever cheese is unwrapped.

Choose Easy Rhymes

Before writing the first line, jot down several rhymes for your key word. This prevents arriving at line five and discovering you have based the entire poem around “orange”.

Keep the Setup Simple

Use the first two lines to introduce the pet and the situation. The shorter third and fourth lines can escalate the problem, then the final line delivers the joke or twist.

Use the Pet's Name Carefully

Names with easy rhymes are a gift. Difficult names can sit elsewhere in the line rather than forcing a rhyme so tortured that the dog appears to have been named solely to annoy poets.

Read It Out Loud

Limericks rely on rhythm. Reading the draft aloud makes clumsy syllables obvious and usually reveals where a line is trying to carry the verbal equivalent of three suitcases upstairs.
