  • Custom Pet Pillow Crop Guide: Headshot or Full Body?

    June 05, 2023 3 min read

    For a custom pet pillow, a head-and-shoulders crop usually gives the face the most visual impact, while a full-body image is better when the petโ€™s pose or body markings are part of what makes the photo special. Neither crop is automatically better. The right choice depends on what you want the finished cushion to preserve.

    Paw & Gloryโ€™s current personalised pet pillow is offered in square formats, including 12 ร— 12 in, 18 ร— 18 in and 22 ร— 22 in on the verified current product. That square shape makes crop decisions more noticeable than they can seem on a phone screen.

    When a headshot works best

    Choose a closer crop when the petโ€™s face is the main story. It is especially useful for:

    • distinctive eyes or facial markings;
    • expressive ears;
    • older photos where the body is less clear;
    • designs where facial likeness needs maximum space;
    • smaller cushion sizes.

    Try not to crop so tightly that ear tips, the top of the head or characteristic fur are accidentally removed.

    When a half-body crop works best

    A chest-up or half-body photograph can preserve more posture and coat pattern while still keeping the face large enough to read clearly.

    This is often a useful compromise for pets with a distinctive chest patch, collar, bandana or seated pose.

    When full body is worth keeping

    Use a full-body reference when the petโ€™s stance, proportions or markings are important to the image. A long-bodied dachshund, a cat with unusual leg markings or a dog sitting in a characteristically ridiculous position may lose part of its identity in an aggressive close crop.

    The trade-off is simple: the more body you include, the smaller the face becomes within a fixed square area.

    Leave space around the pet

    Source photos with a little extra space are often easier to compose than images already cropped against the petโ€™s nose, ears or paws. You can remove unused space later; restoring missing ear tips requires rather more optimism.

    Our pet portrait photo guide covers the wider photo-selection checks.

    What about multiple pets?

    If the chosen pillow design supports more than one pet, each animal needs enough room to remain clear. Multiple-pet compositions generally need less aggressive cropping than a single face.

    See one pet versus multiple pets on a custom pillow before choosing the references.

    Should you keep a collar or harness in the crop?

    Keep it if it is meaningful, visually distinctive or part of how you remember the pet. Remove or minimise it if it distracts from the face and the chosen design allows that change.

    Our guide to collars, tags and harnesses in pet portraits helps with that decision.

    Check the proof at normal viewing size

    When the artwork preview arrives, first look at the complete composition rather than immediately zooming into individual pixels. Ask:

    • Is the face large enough to read?
    • Are both ears and important markings visible?
    • Does the pet feel centred appropriately for the design?
    • Is there awkward empty space?
    • Does the crop preserve the expression or pose you chose the photo for?

    Paw & Gloryโ€™s current pillow range includes an artwork preview before production and artwork edits before approval.

    Quick crop decision

    • Headshot: strongest facial emphasis.
    • Half body: balance of face, chest markings and posture.
    • Full body: best when pose and body shape matter.
    • Several pets: allow more composition space and check the product supports the pet count.

    Choose the crop that preserves what makes the photograph recognisable. A personalised cushion has limited real estate, because furniture, like search results, remains stubbornly finite.

    Current designs and options are available in the personalised pet pillow collection.
