  • National Service Dog Month: What It Is & How to Show Respect

    September 08, 2024 5 min read

September is National Service Dog Month, an awareness month focused on the work service dogs do alongside disabled people and on improving public understanding of service dog teams.

That makes it a useful occasion for something rather more valuable than describing every working dog as a โ€œheroโ€ until the word has been polished smooth. Learn what service dogs actually do, respect the person working with the dog and understand the basic etiquette that helps a team get on with its day.

What is National Service Dog Month?

Canine Companions describes September as National Service Dog Month, dedicated to raising awareness and appreciation for the impact trained service dogs can have for people with disabilities.

The month is especially visible in the United States, where Canine Companions and other organisations use September for education, events, advocacy and public-awareness campaigns.

    What is a service dog?

Definitions and legal rules vary between countries, so it is sensible to use the terminology of the relevant local organisation rather than assuming every working or support animal is interchangeable.

Assistance Dogs International uses assistance dog as an umbrella term for guide, hearing and service dogs trained to perform tasks that mitigate the effects of a person's disability. Within that terminology, a service dog works with a disabled person in roles other than guide or hearing work.

Depending on the individual team, trained tasks can include retrieving items, opening or closing doors, assisting with mobility or responding to particular cues or situations. The important point is not to guess what somebody's disability is from the dog beside them.

Service dogs, therapy dogs and emotional-support animals are not the same thing

These terms are often bundled together online as though they describe one large category of exceptionally considerate dogs. They do not.

Assistance Dogs International distinguishes task-trained assistance dogs from therapy dogs and companion animals. The exact legal status and public-access rules depend on the country, so this article is not a substitute for local legal guidance.

For everyday public behaviour, you do not need to diagnose the category from twenty feet away. If a dog is working with a handler, give the team space and let the handler decide whether interaction is appropriate.

How should you behave around a service dog?

Canine Companions' current etiquette guidance is refreshingly straightforward:

    • Ask before interacting. Do not assume the dog is available for petting, photographs or conversation.
    • Speak to the handler. Address the person, not the dog.
    • Respect the team's space. Avoid crowding, calling to or trying to distract the dog.
    • Assume the dog is working. Even when the situation looks relaxed, the dog may still be performing an important role.

In other words, a service vest is not an invitation to become the dog's unexpected social appointment.

Do not ask intrusive questions about somebody's disability

Curiosity does not create an entitlement to personal medical information.

If a handler chooses to talk about their service dog, follow their lead. Canine Companions advises speaking directly to the handler and focusing on respectful interaction rather than treating the dog as public property or the person's disability as a conversation starter.

Can you photograph a service dog in public?

Do not assume you can photograph a stranger or their service dog simply because the dog is distinctive or working in public. If you want a photograph, ask the person first and accept the answer without making it a negotiation.

For people photographing their own service dog, the same basic pet-photography principles apply when the dog is off duty or the photograph does not interfere with its work: use clear natural light, keep the face sharp and choose a familiar expression.

Our pet portrait photo guide covers lighting, focus and framing without requiring the dog to perform for the camera.

How can you support service dog organisations?

The most useful support is usually whatever a reputable organisation currently says it needs.

That might include donating, volunteering, puppy raising, fundraising or helping with awareness campaigns. Assistance Dogs International's member search can help people find accredited member organisations by country and the types of assistance dogs they train.

If you are in the United States, Canine Companions also lists current National Service Dog Month activities, educational resources and ways to support its work on its Service Dog Month page.

    Celebrating your own service dog

For a handler, September can also be a reason to keep a record of the dog as an individual, not only as a working partner.

That might mean saving a favourite off-duty photograph, printing an image, organising older pictures or creating artwork from a photo that captures a familiar expression. There is no requirement to turn the dog into a caped symbol of bravery. A recognisable face is allowed to be enough.

If you are choosing a photograph for artwork, our guide to choosing the best pet portrait photo explains what to check, and current personalised pet portrait styles are available here.

Remembering a retired or former service dog

A service dog's working life and the relationship around it can leave an enormous archive of photographs, routines and memories.

If you are remembering a dog who has retired or died, you do not need the perfect formal photograph. An older image can still be valuable when it shows the face, markings and expression clearly enough to recognise the dog.

Our guide to creating a pet memorial portrait from an old photograph explains how to assess older reference images without promising detail that simply is not present in the file.

    Frequently asked questions

When is National Service Dog Month?

National Service Dog Month is observed throughout September.

What is the purpose of National Service Dog Month?

It is used to raise awareness and appreciation for service dogs and the people who work with them, as well as to improve public understanding of service dog roles and etiquette.

Should I pet a service dog?

Ask the handler before interacting with the dog and respect their answer. A service dog may be working even when the situation appears relaxed.

Should I speak to the dog or the handler?

Speak directly to the handler. Do not call, whistle to or otherwise try to distract the dog.

Are service dogs and therapy dogs the same?

No. Assistance Dogs International distinguishes task-trained assistance dogs from therapy dogs and companion animals. Terminology and legal rules vary by country, so check authoritative local guidance for public-access questions.

How can I support National Service Dog Month?

Learn appropriate service dog etiquette and check reputable assistance-dog organisations for their current volunteering, fundraising, donation or awareness needs.

National Service Dog Month is most useful when it improves understanding. Respect the handler, do not distract the dog, learn from organisations that actually train and place assistance dogs, and leave the grand declarations to the internet. The team has practical things to do.
