A cat memorial portrait starts with a photograph that feels unmistakably like the cat you remember. For many cats, likeness lives in small details: eye shape, coat markings, ear position and the particular expression that made an ordinary glance feel like a formal judgement.
The photograph does not have to be professional or recent. It needs to preserve enough reliable detail for the artwork while still carrying the personality that matters to you.
Choose a photograph where the face is reasonably close, the eyes are visible and distinctive markings can be seen. A photo taken near eye level often gives a more natural view of the head than one taken directly from above.
Not automatically. A photograph from an earlier life stage may capture the expression or appearance you most strongly associate with your cat. The purpose of a memorial portrait is not to document chronology; it is to preserve the version that feels most recognisable to you.
Potentially. A soft or faded photograph can still be useful when the face, markings and overall shape remain recognisable. Other photographs can provide supporting detail for coat colour, ears or eyes.
Keep the untouched original and avoid depending on aggressive enhancement that may invent texture or alter features. Our old and blurry pet-photo guide explains how to assess imperfect reference images.
For black and very dark cats, look for a photograph where the face is separated from the background and the eyes and ears remain visible. Soft natural light can reveal fur texture and face shape that disappear in a dim room.
Those details may carry much of the likeness. Use extra photographs if the favourite image does not show the eye colour, facial blaze, chest marking or other distinctive feature clearly. Small differences matter considerably when the owner has spent years looking at the same face.
Keep it if the collar or tag feels part of the memory. Remove it if you prefer a cleaner portrait or if the cat rarely wore one. There is no rule that memorial artwork must add or remove accessories.
Our collar, tag and harness portrait guide explains the choice in more detail.
Yes. Separate references can be useful when cats were never photographed together, refused to coordinate, or lived with the family at different times. Choose clear individual images and label them carefully.
See our multi-pet portrait guide for practical advice. If you are using several images to clarify one cat's appearance rather than combining several pets, our memorial pet portrait from multiple photos guide explains the reference-image method.
A framed portrait gives a defined presentation that can sit alongside photographs and other framed art. A custom pet canvas creates a different wall-art finish. Measure the intended space and choose for the home rather than following a supposed memorial rule.

Paw & Glory's current custom portrait range is hand-illustrated from customer photographs. Customers review an artwork preview before production so the personalised artwork can be checked before the chosen physical item is made.

Memorial artwork can be comforting for somebody who wants a visible reminder of their cat, but not everyone wants one immediately. If the loss is recent or the recipient's preferences are unclear, asking can be more considerate than insisting on a surprise.
For other remembrance options, see our cat memorial gifts guide and pet sympathy-card messages.
Yes. A clear phone photograph can provide enough reference detail when the face, eyes and markings are visible.
Use the largest original version you can find and assess how much facial detail remains visible. Do not destroy the original with aggressive filters.
It can when the chosen product supports multiple subjects. Separate photos may be used as references when no good group image exists.
Only if they add something meaningful for you. A portrait can remain completely personal without any text.
A memorial portrait does not need to explain the whole relationship. Cats would object to that level of administrative summary anyway. Choose the photograph that preserves the face and expression you know, then let the artwork do one simple job well.
